WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE TROPHY FISH TO SPEAR......... 1 Year, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Howzit Guys

After spearing a Sailfish and a Black Marlin in the last year i found myself thinking; what is the ultimate Trophy Fish...?

Most of us spearos dream of landing huge bill fish or tuna... and when it happens there is nothing on earth that can explain the intense rush of excitement!!

The reason for my question: On a recent trip to Sodwana a friend of mine shot a 11.5kg green job fish at 32meters!

Surely thats a much more impressive dive and fish to shoot than a 25kg sailfish shot at 12meters.

It made me think of so many great Trophy fish... Huge Daga speared off a reck or a 25kg+ couta speared in green gold muck water or a 80kg Iggy speared in a deep cave....

Whats your ultimate Trophy Fish...?

I think that the big bill fish and other pelagics are really a luck thing. The dagas are generally "easier" to shoot you just need to be able to dive to insane depths, but I have found once you have placed the shot it is fine. The real skill for me is lying on the bottom till your eyes pop out waiting for a nice reefie to get in close enough like a decent brusher, poensie etc. I really enjoy targeting bronzies because they can be really skittish and often you have to really stalk the clever ones.

No contest. Big Jobfish, at depth though without chumming.

We target them at Protea and this is a real challenging dive. There are big ones and I have lost lost 2 maybe 3 SA record size fish. Not one of them was easy and I'll keep on targeting them until I get that SA record.

Got two over 10kg and any of my mates will attest that faced with a 200kg Marlin or 10kg Jobfish what my choice will be.

I Agree..... The game fish we target has way more to do with luck than anything else!

Right place right time with a decent flasher and you are bound to get a couple!

Sure, the more you dive and study the weather and current patters the more likely you are of shooting game fish but these days i think spearing is not just about shooting anymore its about hunting...!

Being able to selectively target and hunt a specific fish is what makes you a great spearo in my mind.

Look at Koos for example, that guy will get buss whahoo at Vidal when no else even sees one.. That is skill and loads of experiance. But then there are guys that will get iggy and huge job fish at 30m in horrible conditions..

Fish sence in mind plays a massive role...?
