TOPIC: What is the problem
#660
What is the problem 1 Year, 8 Months ago Karma: 1
So here is my topic...
I love spearfishing as do most of you i am sure.
Why is there such a massive rift in the community, some guys wont even bother to greet you walking down the beach. I have had guys taking a dig at me cause i dive shallow and am a super average diver.
There too is a massive divide between who uses what gear... who cares the problems that are involved in that are between manufacturers not us! I use mostly Freedivers gear, i bought omer fins i go in dive factory once in a while to look for dvds and see if there is anything i like. Who cares?!?! If we all stood united we would see how big and strong the "little" community is we may then also have more pull in getting things done. When last did all the spearo's get together and have a beach / reef clean up??? What is wrong with us??? we all have the same goals i would think unpolluted un littered oceans with abundant fish life.
Judging by the topics here its all about who uses what gear and so on to be honest when guys take digs at the manufacturers product i would love to see the likes of Shane Breedt and Jeremy Williams respond just to see if guys are being unfair and biased this too will give all of us better insight into problems and things to be aware of.... go read the carbon fins write ups by Jeremy Williams and Chris Coates that is what we are all really after here.

Well said!!!!! But unfortunately that is what comes from any sport. You should try motor racing that is disgusting all the politics that go on there.

Hey Jonno, sad isn’t it….. As manufactures we should all be talking to each other, but I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon. There are some individuals in our industry that continually undermine the different brands out there, this also creates tension between manufactures. I don’t think that the younger generation of spear fishermen know how lucky they are, 20 or so years ago, you did not have the choice or quality of product that’s on the market today in SA. Divers are quick to point fingers and criticize; constructive criticism is good, talk to us and help us to make better products. There is a lot of good product out there, it may not all work for you, but find what works and stick with it. As Jeremy Williams once said to me , you can please some people, some of the time, not all the time.
Cheers

Having a division about what manufacturer to support or who use what gear is small minded because of our individuality. I use a gun from one manufacturer with a rubber from a different supplier and also a different spear. So What if it works for me.

But you what suggested about a reef/beach clean up or any other type of investment we can make on our own future is truly visionary and deserves support from all.

Our community needs not to only invest in our self but also in the Future, educate the Jung guns. Get rid of the real
poacher (not the bloke that stuff up occasionally) but the ones diving crays 5 nights a week in a sanctuary and also those who damage and destroy where ever they go.

With your idea Jonathan, we can invest in making this a sport our children can also enjoy. If you spearhead a project of this nature I will take leave to support you and I'm sure a place like ORI will have a lot of suggestions where you could begin.

Firstly what we the consumer some times sees as a bad thing, I am talking about the friction, animosity, hatred etc between manufacturers is not all what it seems and is not necessarily a bad thing for the end user.

The competitiveness and fighting for market share means that the end user gets a better product at a better price with good service.

Even when new products come out and there is a bit of banter between the manufacturers, this is just part of the process that has made South African gear so good. The guys feed off each others developments and ideas and continue to try and out do each other .... like I said a good thing.

I will go as far as to say that even in cases where one manufacturer has ripped off another's product, this is not a bad thing. I know the guys get upset and rightly so, but for us users its good. Here is why, the who got ripped of is so pissed he goes and improves his original idea making it better.

Again good for us!

I think most of this 'problem' is on the consumer side .... like a bunch of mad soccer fans rooting for a team ... damn hooligans
