Will gear that is camouflaged be less conspicuous for fish or will the plain one actually attract them out of curiosity? And which specie of fish will this techniques work for? Last week a decent size grunter approached from my left and only the from 20cm of my barrel was visible from his side of the rock, he got spooked by it and bolted.

I have a question regarding camo wetsuits.

The objective of camouflage is to break the outlines of a shape so it may blend in with its surroundings. E.g. Blue military camo was design to elude infrared visual aids. If we take the time to observe military camouflage patterns, its very clear, differed terrains require different camo patterns and camouflage techniques etc.

I’ve been looking at various name brands which offer camo patterns in their range … and there are some very impressive camo patterns on the market to choose from… There are three overseas name brands which have impressed me, Omersub and Sporasub with their new 3D and mimetic camo range and Spetton with their Hex Skin camo suits. I’ve gone into YOUTUBE and have sussed these camo wetsuits and they look very impressive indeed. However, looking at our type of ocean bottom and colour, how effective will theses camo patterns be for local use? I see Spetton developed the Hex skin for the Indian Ocean and it provides a good blend with what we encounter in the northern parts of KZN like Sodwana but I’m not convinced about the other two name brands. Is our Local chaps making up camo wetsuits to suit our terrain … if so why should we even consider buying imported brands then? (Disregarding the thread on Elios and neoprene qualities) Besides I know a number of very good spearos spearing in their black suits and it makes no difference to them.

Do camo wetsuits really make that much difference or is it because camo suits looks good and it provides the spearo with that extra psychological advantage? Please guys, I need your personal view points here.

Thanx.

From what I can gather re South African needs, the first camo came into the country to replace the common black suit. I believe it was the guys in the Cape who started using it because they no longer wanted to look like a seal. They have good reason for this. The same camo was also used in Natal waters but some said they felt they were not able to hunt certain fish because the fish now thought they were a large potato bass. Since then camo has changed a lot. The better ones are made by sublimation printing. This looks great but fades from sun light, unlike screen printed. The advantage of sublimation is that the print run can be small. With screen printing a custom camo you are looking at 2000 sheets. It takes about one sheet to make a suit. I have heard a few guys say they are convinced that camo is better. Even if it is psychological who cares, as long as you feel better. Personally I think it must have some affect to break up you apparent size.

Hi Fernando. I think camos can make a difference especially when hunting certain reef spices , but for the most part a black suit will work fine. In most cases, its what the consumer believes will work for them, they all work.

Thanx for the insight guys,

Hi Shane,
at one stage you where offering a camo suit which I personally though was a good combination of colours for our waters … If I recall the camo correctly, the base colour was green with blackish grey contrasts, very much like the black / grey camo range you carried once upon a time. Do you still stock that neoprene? If so, please let me know.
